Week 2 Summary (04/17/1911 - 04/23/1911)

John McGraw, Manager
New York Giants
Week Two of the 1911 replay is in the books and things are moving along nicely. While games were played every day this past week, there were just not a lot of games actually played. This was likely weather-related, but starting tomorrow we see full daily slates of games on the schedule. In this short period, there have been nine injured players already. I only have rest-of-game injuries only so there is no long-term impact here and these things do tend to come in waves, so I am hoping this slows down going forward.

The strongest teams in both leagues have been asserting themselves early. In the AL the Athletics haven't been hitting like Cleveland, but they have the better pitching to keep them in games. The Naps are scoring seven+ runs per game through the first two weeks of the season behind the strong bat of Joe Jackson, so while I expect Jackson to keep hitting the rest of the team should level out.

In the NL, it is the Giants and Pirates that have dominated so far. New York has utilized good pitching and an effective offense to move to the top of the standings, but so far Pittsburgh has done the same and the two teams are tied atop the NL. The Giants have the better pitching so it will be hard for the Pirates to stay with them.

Both leagues are off to a fast start offensively but I don't expect this will maintain. I thought I was being more aggressive with both steal attempts and sacrifices this past week but I think I am now farther behind than I was previously. It is early so as long as I stay focused on these they should correct themselves, plus both of these bring in a lot more outs, so that should temper my offensives to some degree.

It's still early, so I will hold off on a leader's report for another week or so. There are no longer any players hitting over .600, and by the end of next week, we likely won’t have anybody hitting over .500, especially now since the games played are going to peak up. It's always fun seeing how these things work out as the season progresses.
