Week Eight of the 1911 BBW Replay is in the
books and this past week we moved out of the month of May and into June. There
is only one team (the Chicago White Sox) that hasn't reached the forty games played
mark but they will get there tomorrow. By the end of Week Nine, we should have
several teams over the fifty games played mark, which should really mark the one-third
point of the season. This past Tuesday was Memorial Day and everyone played a
doubleheader which helped teams start to get caught up from their
weather-related slow starts to getting games played.Cincinnati Reds
In the American League, the Philadelphia
Athletics have been flexing their muscles for the past few weeks and they are
not showing any signs of letting up. They are currently on a six-game winning
streak and have opened a 5.0 game lead over second-place Boston. Boston is
playing well, but their spot in second place has recently been secured as third-place Chicago and fourth place Cleveland have both have had their own struggles
recently.
Pittsburgh and New York are both continuing
to dominate the National League. The Giants have cut a little into the Pirates'
lead, but the Pirates have refused to fold and have kept their nearest opponent
at bay with a current 3.0 game lead. The story of the NL from this past week
was the St. Louis Cardinals. They started the week with four consecutive
doubleheaders against Cincinnati as both teams needed to make up for a rained-out weekend series from late April. The Cardinals went 6-1-1 for the four-day series and then St. Louis ended the week
by winning three games at home versus Brooklyn. This was enough to move them up
into fourth place, only one-half game behind the third-place Chicago Cubs.Cincinnati Reds
All discussions about stats in this replay
revolve around Shoeless Joe Jackson. After nine weeks and 44 games played
Jackson is hitting a robust .528. Ty Cobb is hitting a very healthy .432, but
is still almost a full .100 points behind Jackson. Jackson (51) leads Cobb (45)
in runs scored, Cobb (47) has the lead over Jackson (45) in RBI’s, Jackson (94)
leads Cobb (86) in hits, Jackson (29) leads in multi-hit games over Cobb (24), Jackson
leads the league in doubles (30), and Cobb leads the league in triples (9).
This far into the season Jackson’s OPS is a stellar 1.388. I still think
Jackson will slow down at some point, but it hasn’t happened yet.
The only pitcher who has double figures in
wins is Philadelphia’s Jack Coombs (12-2, 1.84). He picked three wins this past
week, the second time he added three wins in a week so far this season. Slim
Sallee and Bob Harman also both picked up three wins this past week, part of
the St. Louis (NL) slaughter of the Reds in their early week doubleheader extravaganza.Reds Manager

The replay marches on, although gameplay will be on hiatus for a while as I am getting ready to go trick-or-treating with the grandkids. I won't have to dress up so no costumes are necessary - I am scary enough as is.
