Week 21 Summary (08/28/1911 - 09/03/1911)

Week 21 of the 1911 BBW replay is in the books and the fun continues. All the AL teams have passed the 120 games played mark while half of the NL teams have, so we are down to that ~30 games remaining point, the final 20% of the season. We are now into the month of September, tomorrow is Labor Day, so doubleheaders for everyone. Even with a fast start to these final games, there are still six weeks remaining.

As for the pennant races, Philadelphia (AL) ended the week on a nine-game winning streak. The A's had a three-game series versus second-place Boston earlier this past week and in two days Philadelphia reduced their magic number from 19 to 13 with a three-game sweep. At this point, the A's have a 19.5 game lead with ~30 games left to play, so yes, it is pretty much over in the AL.

In the NL, Pittsburgh ended the week on an eleven game winning streak and have moved their lead up to 10.5 games over second-place New York, so my hopes of a furious late-season Giants comeback have pretty much faded. Sure, anything can happen, but New York lost ground even while Honus Wagner was out for two weeks. Wagner returned for one game and will then miss ~10 more days before returning to play, but all through this, the Pirates have been absolutely relentless in their pursuit of the pennant.

Shoeless Joe Jackson ended the week hitting .473, the hopes of hitting .500 for the season now long gone. He still leads the AL in hits (227), doubles, (57), and homeruns (10), but Cleveland remains tied for sixth place, two games out of third place, in that mess on the middle of the AL standings. Someone is going to get hot in these final few weeks of the AL season and move to the top of this heap, so it is there for the taking for any one of these teams who might want it.
